For some reason, very few people seem to have heard of LAVE (yet), but they have to be one of the most exciting bands around at the moment. seafoam is the second track (ever) from the Columbus duo, consisting of Joey Biesiada and Joey Teale who formed LAVE earlier this year.

The dreamy synth lines of seafoam take the indietronica concept somewhere completely new – taking the cool of bands like The 1975 and the genius of composers like Brian Eno to form a whole new sound. A more natural sound, in comparison to other synth records, is explored, evoking imagery of waves washing against the coastline, sweeping back and forth – the perfect atmosphere for those summer nights.

As a whole, the song is minimalistic – but in no way lacks substance. Production is largely to thank for this: it does in fact repeat the same synth line for the whole song, but makes clever use of studio effects (that I won’t list for brevity) which keep every phrase feeling fresh.

The drum line is used a little more like seasoning (I’m hungry, can you tell?), but it’s not an after thought by no means. It’s so relaxed that you’re hanging on every beat.

Emotion leaks into this electronic landscape through soft, echoey vocals. Honestly, I can’t tell you what the lyrics are about – I would love to find out though. I have some theories, but they’re just that, theories…(e.g. the persona is mourning the death of a loved one…?) Nevertheless, the lyrics are in keeping with the natural themes of the song  – which is very comforting to listen to.

To sum up: seafoam cleverly combines nature and technology, to form a beautiful landscape of sound. You’ll be left thinking, why isn’t everyone listening to this?

See you next time,

Proud to say that I was their 80th sub on YouTube (just wanted to commemorate that here for when they become famous).
